Edward Schlissel, DDS, MS, FAGD

 

Dr. Schlissel received his dental training at the University of Buffalo. After graduation, he moved to Long Island where he joined the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University. While teaching dentistry, he received a Masters of Science degree in Materials Science from the College of Engineering and Applied Science. In 2004, Dr. Schlissel left Stony Brook, where he was Professor and Chair of the Department of General Dentistry and moved to Atlanta, Georgia.


During his 30-year career as a member of the faculty, Dr. Schlissel held many positions and received many professional awards. He served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Director of the General Practice Residency Program. He was elected to membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society. He was a member of the New York State Board of Dentistry and is a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. He is Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and is a member of several professional societies, including the Academy of Osseointegration. He is the author of many articles, research abstracts and book chapters. He has lectured widely on many topics in restorative dentistry, including dental implants, coordinating treatment planning and implant care, and dental materials.


In Georgia and while at Stony Brook, Dr. Schlissel maintained a dental practice, with emphasis on complex restorative care, usually involving the coordination of treatment with periodontists, oral surgeons and orthodontists. His office is in Marietta, Georgia, where he practices dentistry with Doctors Jon and Blair Waldron.


Dr. Schlissel has extensive experience with the CEREC 3-D system for CAD/CAM restorations.  He is certified as an in-office advanced trainer for other dentists. 


Dr. Schlissel is currently Professor Emeritus of General Dentistry at the School of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook University.  He continues to teach the courses in Dental Materials Science to pre-doctoral dental students and to give seminars to the residents in General Dentistry and Periodontics.  He is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Emory University Medical Center, where he gives seminars to the residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Schlissel received a BA from Brooklyn College in 1969 and DDS from the University of Buffalo in 1973.  In 1982 he received a Masters of Science in Materials Science from the College of Engineering and Applied Science, Stony Brook University.  He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the dental honor society and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry.

 

From 1974 until 2004, Dr. Schlissel was a member of the full-time faculty of the School of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook University, where he held numerous positions and taught many courses.  He served as Chairman, Department of General Dentistry, Director of the General Practice Residency Program, Director of the Dental Laboratory, Director of Continuing Dental Education and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.  He was a member of the New York State Board for Dentistry and a consultant to the Commission on Dental Education.  He is a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners and several professional societies.  Currently Dr. Schlissel holds appointments as Professor Emeritus of General Dentistry, Stony Brook University and Clinical Professor of Surgery at Emory University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  He is also the implant consultant to Atlanta Oral and Facial Surgery.

 

Dr. Schlissel is the author of papers and has given presentations on a wide range of topics, including dental implants, restorative dental techniques, dental materials and dental education.  He has lectured at numerous dental meetings, consulted with dental manufacturers and given many courses of continuing education.  His areas of major interest are the integration of new technologies into practice and the issues related to the coordination of care in multidisciplinary dental treatment.

 

Since graduation from dental school, Dr. Schlissel has practiced dentistry, in both the private sector and the intramural faculty practice.  He currently practices dentistry in Marietta, Georgia.
